World Wheelchair Basketball Championships
National Indoor Arena
7- 17 July 2010
Birmingham is hosting one of the major Paralympics sports this year as the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships comes to the city. The event is being held at the National Indoor Arena from 7th – 17th July and will see around 330 competitors from five continents taking part in the competition.
The event involves tournaments for both men and women with 12 men’s and 10 women’s teams competing in the championships. The women’s event sees the same line-up as the Beijing Paralympics, when the USA beat Germany to take the gold medal in the final. Both teams will be looking for a similar performance this time around. The men’s competition includes two new countries – Algeria and Poland who will be looking to do well in their first world Championships.
This event will be the most important and biggest wheelchair basketball event in this country before the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Great Britain’s men and women teams will be hoping that home advantage will count as they both bid to become world champions for the first time. The women open the championships after the opening ceremony against The Netherlands at 3pm on Wednesday 7 July while the men play South Korea afterwards at 5.10pm.
