Just a thought..... if zone defence was banned from use in the WMBL (particularly below the Premier League), would the games be a better platform for younger players learning the game?
I for one, see a lack of imagination from the younger players I have worked with lately, who seem used to be playing against a (albeit normally completely static) zone and would advocate the use of good old-fashioned help defence as a better (and more exciting) opponent.
Don't even get me started on the bad habits (i.e. laziness) I've seen from some players in this league, who use the zone to "have a rest before we go up the other end and have some fun,"
That's not to say that a well executed zone defence isn't as worthy as man-to-man as a way of stopping your opponent - I'm just worried that the kids in this league will see and replicate what some of the more "seasoned" players do on defence (normally in a poor excuse for a zone).
Plus, I'd love to see the refs get to grips with another complex rule.... ;-) I can't wait for one of them to struggle with the change in the new half-court rule too..... :-§
Anyway - this forum doesn't get used enough, so if this isn't read by anyone, at least it's off my chest and on the web instead....
