What is everybody's take on how referees have got to grips with the new rules? In particular, have they been correctly calling fouls by the last defender (who is alongside or behind the attacker) as unsportsmanlike?

In a game recently, the last defender fouled somebody on the fast break from behind, and the ref said "we're not giving fouls like that as unsportsmanlike." This was one of the top refs in the country. Apparently because it was close to the basket, the rule doesn't apply.
